Like in the biography of almost everyone who is interested in painting and drawing, drawing and painting have been an interest of mine since childhood. It may sound a little surprising if I tell you that my least favorite subject in primary school was art class.

Simply put, I didn’t like it because we were always expected to draw the same subjects. Everyone who went to (Turkish) primary school knows what those subjects were, so there’s no need to list them again. We were constantly expected to draw the same things, and that bored me. I even remember asking myself once, “Why do I have to paint the roof of the school building red?” I looked up at my art teacher. She didn’t seem ready for a question like that anyway. She would simply give us the topic and never speak again. Then I said to myself, “Not now. Just pass the class. :)”

With that mindset, I made it to the end of middle school by getting grades that were just enough to pass my other classes as well. My classmates performed at average or above-average levels in mathematics and science and went on to different high schools. But it had already become clear by middle school that I wasn’t as good as they were at memorizing the multiplication table — or many other things, for that matter. Because I kept asking “why” and was never satisfied with the answers, I couldn’t make myself memorize what I was supposed to, and I often found myself unprepared for exams.

There was, however, one conventional school subject that I was successful in… English. While I was almost silent in every other class, English was the class where I became the superstar. My teacher had noticed me. Whenever nobody could answer one of her questions, she would ask me instead, and I would stand up and give the answer. Reading an English dictionary in the evenings must have been helping. People looked at me as if I were some strange student who had come from America through an elementary school Erasmus program. That’s how English became the only branch I could hold onto in the world of education.

When it was time to choose a high school, I had a decision to make. Would I go to a regular high school, study languages, or choose something completely different? I voted for something completely different.

Graphic Design.

The graphic design software I had become familiar with at home thanks to my family, together with their support, played a major role in my decision to choose this path.

Coincidentally, this was also where I started taking drawing classes. It was during those years that a drawing ability, which had remained hidden inside me for a long time, finally emerged. Five years later, after graduating at the top of my class from that demanding curriculum, I realized I didn’t want to continue in the same field at university. I was already exhausted, and I simply couldn’t find that motivation within myself anymore. On top of that, in the entrance exam for the university’s Graphic Design department, there was a rather fantastical question asking us to “draw an office from the future,” and I only made the waiting list. In the entrance exam for the Painting department, however, I ranked fifth. Thinking that everything happens for a reason, I decided to study Painting.

But then another problem appeared. I was finally allowed to paint roofs green instead of red, but this time my painting style didn’t match what the school wanted. My style was considered “illustrative,” so I struggled in studio classes. This time, unlike before, I had painting instructors who cared about my work and, as I said, allowed me to paint roofs green. But now they wanted the building to be drawn this way instead of that way. Once again, I couldn’t make the school’s version of art the way I wanted.

Once again, I graduated by telling myself, “Just pass the classes.” After graduating from university, just as everyone experiences, you are assisted off the set like at the end of The Truman Show. You are now in the real world. Standing at the beginning of a long road full of countless turns, portfolio in hand, you feel as though you have simply been shown the door.

At the age of twenty-three, I found myself facing this enormous uncertainty. Those who have experienced it know that this is a heavy burden at the age of twenty-three. I had two professions in my hands, yet all of a sudden I had become Harry Potter living in the Muggle world, with magic reduced to a hobby. By its very nature, every profession is expected to provide an income. Work that brings no income is called volunteering. At twenty-three, with two professions in my hands, volunteering was not exactly an option for me. Out of the instinct to survive, I first tried freelancing for a while and learned my lesson the hard way.

Then I decided to become a salaried designer. But I made a promise to myself: one day, with the money I earned, I would buy painting supplies and finance my own artistic practice.

For twelve years, I worked as a designer in different organizations. I loved it so much that, at times, I could even say it overshadowed my desire to paint. But those who have the ability to draw know that it has a peculiar nature. It finds you in the most unexpected moments and says, “I’m still here. Pay attention to me.”

And so, during a break in the twelve-year design career that had become my livelihood, it began to grow again. After a year of self-financed retreat, I was finally able to dedicate the amount of time I had always wanted to my paintings and, for the first time, focus exclusively on them. From time to time, I share the outcomes of that period on my instagram and on my personal website. As for my design career, after twelve years I started a master’s degree in design to give that work the depth I believe it deserves. Even though it is sometimes challenging, I am still trying to continue both professions today.

Hem Ressam Hem Tasarımcı Nasıl Oldum? — Her Şeye Rağmen
