I created a 6-month self-funded artist residency for myself. What did I do over those 6 months, and where did I end up?

I read 7 art books.

  • Perspective and Illusions by Phoebe McNaughton

  • The Fraud of Contemporary Art by Avelina Lesper

  • Analytical Painting Studies by Leyla Varlık Şentürk

  • Mark Rothko — Notes to Artists by Mark Rothko

  • Artist Palettes by Alexandra Loske

  • Color Mixing Companion by Julie Collins

  • The Painter’s Handbook: A Complete Reference by Gottsegen, Mark David

I experimented with 10 different mediums.

  • Acrylic

  • Oil sticks

  • Watercolor

  • Oil pastel

  • Soft pastel

  • Graphite pencils

  • Colored pencils

  • Chalk powder

  • Finger paint

  • Gouache

  • I painted 6 canvases.

I painted 140 paper across different sizes and surfaces.

About a year ago, I left my full-time job in the creative industries. Thereafter, I funded a six-month period of freedom for myself — something I came to think of as an art residency.

In this article, I want to talk about what I experienced and felt during those six months as an artist who had spent ten years working full-time in the creative industries in Turkey, and who was trying to reconnect with her identity as an artist.

-

After studying graphic design in high school and then art at university, I spent around ten years working across different roles in the creative industries: graphic design, illustration, art direction, and product design.

By the end of those ten years, all of these roles had turned my creativity into a kind of routine. Using your creative ability to solve design problems can, after so many years, become something that slowly consumes that ability. At least, that is what happened to me.

When you bring the basic elements of art together for a commercial purpose, you can gradually lose sight of what those elements are actually for. This kind of creativity may initially feel like a form of self-expression, but over time it becomes part of a performance.

Instead of thinking about the truth of the work you are making under financial pressures, you spend your time checking whether it works as part of a solution. Over the years, this can create a kind of professional numbness.

Throughout those ten years, I always wanted to make art, but I had become so numb that I could never really find the motivation to act on that desire.

I had started to forget where I had left my artistic practice, and I had never had enough time to think about what I actually wanted to do with it.

Tired weekday evenings would lead into weekends that were never long enough. Weeks followed weeks, months followed months.

This routine came to an end one day about a year ago. For one or two months, I did not want to make any professional effort or engage with professional thinking at all.

After a while, I found myself reaching for some of the art books in my library. I had occasionally added new ones to the collection, but in recent years I had struggled to focus on more than a few pages at a time.

Images kept passing through my mind.

When commercial concerns become a reflex, you start looking at every image from a particular point of view. I had a sharp desire growing inside me. I did not want to create just another image.

For ten years, as I said, I had been producing images that served a design problem.

The first thing I wanted to do was to free my mind from images. I did not want their explanatory quality. What I had in mind was simply to paint without thinking about what I was painting or drawing, without feeling any pressure, and to make marks freely.

Watercolor became a good medium for experiencing the flow of my thoughts freely and transferring it onto the surface.

When you draw in digital environments such as a computer or tablet, every brushstroke is a command. A command is not inherently unpredictable; you are in control.

After carrying that burden of control for so long, a medium like watercolor, with its resistance to complete control, felt good to me.

I could let go of control and, without consciously trying to do so, surrender part of the outcome to natural forces.

I experimented freely with different mediums. There were no meaningful images on the surface; most of them were already inconsistent. Without consciously caring about what I was painting, I worked across different surfaces with different mediums.

I used reference images. I used various things as models. I repainted an old drawing of mine. I made new interpretations from reference images.

I painted, drew lines, cut paper with scissors, and glued things together.

What I was really doing was using my motor skills again. Like a child discovering how to paint from the beginning.

A few months later, I felt that it was time to free myself from the accumulation of images I had created. I felt ready to move forward.

This was how I began the Abstractions series.

This time, all I had in mind was to apply the paint to the surface exactly as it came out of the tube. Without committing to any defined technique, I used my hands, brushes, and many other applicators.

But over time, I realized that even when I made abstract marks, there was still an inevitable desire inside me for them to resemble something.

Even though I thought I did not need that, the desire was still there.

Within this tension, that strong desire to break free had served a purpose. It allowed me to distort the form.

Technique was no longer in service of form.

Looking at the marks I had left on the surface, I had finally managed to loosen my attachment to the model and the image.

Because I was not working directly from a model or reference while making these abstractions, I was relying heavily on memory. Rather than painting the actual appearance of images, I was painting an impression of how they remained in my mind.

You could say I was painting with what was left behind in my mind.

It was a visible stream of thought on the surface. They were created within a few minutes, through intense concentration and at a high pace.

For the first time in months, I felt that I had freed both my mind and body while painting.

For the first time during those six months, it felt as if a door had opened for me.

I had moved beyond the pressure of representation. I was engaging in pure expression.

The accumulated images in my mind were flowing rapidly toward the surface, eventually becoming motifs. The result was the painting of this process: a free expression in which the images I had consciously focused on moved from my mind onto the surface.

This had become a kind of practice for me — a practice that created an outlet for internal things that had remained unexpressed.

Control stops the flow.

My mind was like water released from a dam that had finally been opened. It had waited and waited, grown and grown, accumulated, and now it was free. It was moving with great energy.

It was a flow of energy.

I used this technique for a while, and the energy flowed at a high speed. I made many works in this style.

I began to understand more clearly where I was. Over time, I started to discover its meditative dimension.

In a way, what I was doing was regulating the flow of my mind.

This was how I discovered the meditative side of art.

When you paint, when you draw a line, you work with a feeling. It is right there beside you. This feeling guides you.

Paint this part now.

Draw that line from here to there and stop there.

Do not paint this part any further.

This is the inner voice.

Your instincts speak. They are connected to your soul.

Painting a subject such as a model without its image is an interesting subject.

When I rejected the image of the model, perhaps I had to think instead about its physical presence, its color, and the space around it. There were many things to consider: the dynamics of the pose, the direction of movement, and so on.

One year later, today…

At the time, I had no idea where any of this would lead.

Looking back today, I can see that those six months were not simply a period in which I started painting again. The first traces of the questions I am still exploring today were already there.

Zihnimde kalanlarla boyuyordum denebilirdi.

Bu his sizi yönlendirir.
